Title:   Grave Stele Fragment

Description:   Upper part of shaft of an Attic gravestone, broken at bottom, front reworked with coarser pick. Top edge broken away in back diagonally from corner to dowel hole in top.
Reused as threshold block. Two pivot holes on back face. Back, top and sides weathered and cracked, front shows brown stains and has mortar adhering.
Remains of the sculptured panel begin ca. 0.76m. below top of shaft. Outline of man's head, bearded, facing right. All surface of head chopped away. Some of concave background preserved, showing drove marks and red paint behind head, slighter traces of red paint near face.
In the top of the stele a dowel hole for attachment of crowning member. Sides, back and top of front (preserved surface at upper edge) dressed smooth.
Fine grained white Attic marble.
Context:   Found early in 1952 at a high level south of Church of Apostles.
