This deposit was located beneath a layer of fill under a Late Roman plaster floor (Lots ΒΕ 2093-2095). The deposit was cut at its south end by the Byzantine/Late Roman disturbance excavated in Lots ΒΕ 2087-2088, which explains the presence of terracottas in those contexts. Broad, shallow bowl, plain lip. Curving, canted horseshoe handles. Reserved: deep interior of bottom, resting surface and outer face of foot, line halfway up body, inside and outside lip, within handles, and circle within forming tondo. Red-figured design outside and inside. Hasty style, and proportions of figures almost cartoon-like. Inside: a youth, nude except for a cloak draped over the left arm and shoulder, moves right, holding a long crooked stick or staff in his right hand. Outside: tendrils coiled beneath handles lead to 5- or 6-leaved palmettes which frame scenes of youths-unarmed except for shields, in combat. On one side a nude youth holding a shield decorated with a dot rosette, advances to the right, his right hand held low as though grasping a spear. To his right, a second youth seen in rear view retreats to the right, holding a shield decorated with a feline (panther?) and wearing a cloth of some sort from waist to just above knees. His right hand, too, is bent and held low. ; On the other side a nude youth, holding an undecorated shield and his right arm held high, advances to right, toward a second youth seen in three-quarter frontal view who is retreating right, holding a shield decorated with an animal, apparently a horse, possibly intended to be a panther. Second youth is also nude and also holds his right arm high, as though grasping a spear. ; ; Good black glaze, Attic clay. ; ; Cf. Attic type skyphos. Strong torus foot, deep body, slightly out-turned concave lip, canted horseshoe handles.; Reserved: underside with two glazed circles and central dot; resting surface of foot; stem and bottom of body, stem with added red, lower body decorated with debased tongues in alternating purple and black; central medallion within with painted circle; inside of handles. Lip decorated with two rows of debased ivy leaves.; Lower part of body glazed, painted scene confined to upper half of vase.; Side A: group of three banqueters on a single large mattress. First and third figures recline on left sides, holding up cups in their right hands. Both banqueters turn to look right, both wear unusual headdresses. Figure on right is clearer, with two elongated upright ears between curving horns. Figure on left has three long projections off front, elongated cap with circle at end off back of head. Central figure, a musician playing a flute, sits left. Poor painting and incision.; Side B: Similar scene to side A, but left banqueter largely missing. Central figure sits left holding a lyre. Added white and lack of incision indicate a female, with hair bound up.; Framing scenes and under handles, are numerous large, plump, long-necked birds in pairs or trios: ravens? ducks? geese? Several stand on stumps, suggesting landscape and an outdoor banquet, as does the single small bird in flight to the right of the lyre player's head on side B. Low shallow bowl, omphalos inside at center with corresponding depression on outside. Outside reserved, except for outside of lip, which is glazed, concave and slightly out-turned. Decoration: within, on black background, the omphalos is decorated with five concentric circles in buff clay, now missing. Area around omphalos and the inside of the lip are decorated with thick radiating lines or debased tongues, also in added clay. In bottom of bowl between omphalos and lip, with the ground line toward the lip, six spotted cows walk around the bowl, three done in yellowish-buff clay with red spots and three in brick-red clay with buff spots. One red cow and two halves of light cows missing. Colors of cows alternate. Added clays fairly well preserved on bodies, fainter at legs and tails. No incision. Flaring ring foot, raised line at juncture of body and neck. Deeply pinched mouth, very high-swung thick strap handle. Underside of foot reserved. Shape similar to Agora XII, no. 100, 525-500 B.C.; Decoration covers two-thirds of body. Lowest part of body black-glazed; shoulder decorated with thick black lines (debased tongues) set off from decorated zone by a line of dilute glaze. Painted scene on front only. In center a nude Herakles moves right, escorting a bull with his left hand grasping a horn and his right on the animal's chest. Both are seen in profile. Herakles' club is visible on ground behind bull. They approach, to the right, an armed Athena seated left. She wears the aegis, with a high crested helmet held in her outstretched right hand, her spear held horizontally in her left, with her shield on the ground leaning against her knee. She sits on a small high, solid stool. Behind Herakles and the bull, balancing Athena, is Hermes, also seated (right) on a stool. He wears a cap and his winged sandals. His right hand holds the caduceus and his left is held out, gesturing. ; Fine incision for details of males (hair, eyes, muscles) and bull.
